Staphylococcal prophages decorate their baseplate and/or side fibers with tail-tip associated lysins. After primary attachment, the baseplate is retracted and brought into intimate contact with the staphylococcal cell wall. The tail tip-associated lysins proceed to degrade the peptidoglycan with both D-Ala-Gly endopeptidase and NAM-L-Ala amidase activities prior to genome injection.
