tarH (tagH) : teichoic acid export ATP-binding subunit [1]

Wall teichoic acids in S. aureus use ribitol exclusively as their polyol monomer; therefore teichoic acid enzymes in S. aureus are assigned the "tar" nomenclature. In contrast, S. epidermidis uses glycerol as its polyol monomer so orthologous enzymes in S. epidermidis are assigned the "tag" nomenclature. TarGH assembles as a dimer of heterodimers to pass polymerized, undecaprenol-linked wall teichoic acid components to the outer leaflet of the cell membrane.
