Under normal conditions, YefM2 sequesters YoeB2 rendering it inert. Under stress conditions, TrfA-augmented ClpCP proteolyzes YefM2, YoeB2 binds to active ribosomes and cleaves messenger RNA transcripts near the start codon resulting in de novo translation shutdown.
