Other Information[edit | edit source]

During oxidative conditions, such as those experienced within a macrophage, methionine residues in proteins may be oxidized to methionine sulfoxide. Peptide-methionine-(R)-sulfoxide reductase B (MsrB) specifically reduces the (R) epimer of methionine sulfoxide to methionine. Peptide-methionine-(S)-sulfoxide reductase A (MsrA1) catalyzes the analogous reduction for the (S) epimer. S. aureus produces three isoforms of MsrA but only MsrA1 is thought to contribute meaningful reduction of (S)-sulfoxides. While MsrA2 and MsrA3 are catalytically active, they are transcribed at such low levels that they do not make a meaningful contribution under oxidative conditions.
