Staphylococcal prophage recognize several elements of the staphylococcal cell envelope to guide primary attachment. Receptor binding proteins primarily recognize N-acetylglucosamine-decorated teichoic acids, although there is some inconsistency in the literature whether there is a distinction between lipoteichoic acid or wall teichoic acid binding. This variant appears to primarily recognize lipoteichoic acid with distinctions based on LTA D-alanylation, lysinylation and glycosylation. After primary attachment, receptor binding protein has a second recognition function for O-acetylated peptidoglycan. Individual rbp variants within serogroups may have enhanced recognition for different epitopes, α- or β-linked N-acetylglucosamine, resistance to secondary teichoic acid modifications, etc. which results in different host range trophisms. Further host range distinctions come from interactions between side fiber proteins, which may or may not be present, and host cell envelope epitopes.
