mtpL : serogroup A prophage major tail tube protein large subunit [1]

Most staphylococcal prophages require two major tail tube proteins to form orderly coiled polymers around the tail tape measure protein. While some prophage encode the two tail tube proteins as a single gene with a programmed translational frameshift, Serogroup A prophage encode them as two separate genes. After nucleation at the distal baseplate, MtpS monomers polymerize, spiraling their way up the tail tape measure protein, displacing tail assembly chaperones and incorporating MtpL monomers as necessary to maintain proper tight spirals. Upon reaching the end of the tape measure protein, the final MtpS spiral is stabilized by a ring of tail-completion/"neck" proteins resulting in a tail tube that is structurally-secure and competent for binding to phage capsids.
