tarB (tagB): UDP-N-acetylglucosaminyl-N-acetylmannosamine glycerophosphotransferase [1]
TarB (alt: glycerol phosphate primase) catalyzes the third step of teichoic acid synthesis, adding a single equivalent of glycerol phosphate to the UDP-linked NAG-NAM disaccharide. Wall teichoic acids in S. aureus use ribitol exclusively as their polyol extension monomer, therefore WTA enzymes in S. aureus are assigned the "tar" nomenclature. In contrast, S. epidermidis uses glycerol as its polyol extension monomer so orthologous enzymes in S. epidermidis are assigned the "tag" nomenclature. The utilization of glycerol phosphate by TarB for polyol priming further blurs the line between the "Tar" and the "Tag" nomenclature but because the polymerizing polyol will be ribitol, it retains the "Tar" nomenclature.
