seq2 (seq, selq, entQ) : enterotoxin Q [1]

Staphylococcal enterotoxins are superantigens with potent T-cell stimulating activity through MHC class II binding. However, they are most well-known for their association with emetic food-borne illness and toxic shock syndrome. Staphylococcal enterotoxins can be structurally subdivided into classical staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) or staphylococcal enterotoxin-like (SEl) although functional characterization of SEl suggests emetic potential does not divide cleanly along structural lines. Staphylococcal enterotoxin Q was initially assigned to the "SEl" group (i.e. "selq") based on structure but reassigned as "sek" after functional characterization. This version is found on a mobile genetic element (frequently a satellite pathogenicity island) so, to differentiate it from other potential seq coding sequences, it is assigned the gene name "seq2" by default.
