lyrA (spdC) : histidine kinase signal transduction-modulating membrane protein [1]
• A crystal structure is available : 6U0O
• This integral membrane protein is a bona fide virulence factor in that it modulates so many signal transduction cascades. It binds to 13 of the 18 staphylococcal histidine kinases where it can increase (SaeS) or decrease (WalK) phosphorylation of the cognate response regulator. It also appears to associate with some transglycosylases where it serves as a surrogate membrane anchor. Its primary regulatory effects are seen in responses to cell envelope stresses, but whether that is from increased peptidoglycan crosslinking via direct SagB interactions or altered WalK signaling is unclear.
