Staphylococci synthesize the nicotinamide metallophore staphylopine to scavenge trace metals from the environment. CntL transfers the amino acid component of S-adenosylmethionine (alpha-aminobutyrate) to the amino group of D-histidine resulting in a nicotinamide intermediate.
