FemB is responsible for the third and final step in synthesis of the peptidoglycan pentaglycine cross-bridge. It adds a glycyl-glycine to triglycyl-lipid-II resulting in a pentaglycine cross-bridge stem capable of transpeptidation by penicillin binding proteins. When bound to FmhC, FemB can incorporate a glycyl-serine resulting in an altered cross-bridge.
