Under normal conditions, YefM1 sequesters YoeB1 rendering it inert. Under stress conditions, TrfA-augmented ClpCP proteolyzes YefM1, YoeB1 binds to active ribosomes and cleaves messenger RNA transcripts near the start codon resulting in de novo translation shutdown.
