str' : satellite pathogenicity island master activator variant Str'
The staphylococcal satellite pathogenicity island ImmA-ImmR-Str' regulatory switch is the functional equivalent of the cip-cI*-cro system from staphylococcal prophage. Unlike with cro which functions as a weak repressor of the lytic pathway, it appears that str' is a bona fide transcriptional activator of rightward transcription. Its binding is less well characterized than ImmR which functions as a dual-repressor of both leftward and rightward transcription. Initial displacement of ImmR from its operators requires binding by one of the SIS inducers to ImmR. This alone leads to partial induction of both leftward and rightward transcription with further partial-induction due to ImmA sequestration of full-length ImmR and complete induction by ImmA proteolysis of ImmR. Whether Str' drives both leftward and rightward transcription in the absence of ImmR repression or if some other factor drives leftward translation is unknown.
