Staphylococcal prophage assemble their phage tails on a baseplate consisting of six distal baseplate hub-cap proteins. The tail tape measure protein is sequestered in the internal foramen of the hexamer and the capsid-proximal face of the baseplate nucleates major tail tube protein spiral polymerization. Additional functional proteins assemble on the baseplate hub-cap including the tail tip-associated lysins, the receptor-binding proteins and the tail fiber proteins generating a mature phage tail.
